Who are refugees?

According to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), a refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries. 73 percent of all refugees and other people in need of international protection come from just five countries: AfghanistanSyriaVenezuelaUkraine and Sudan.

A refugee's journey

After fleeing their home country, refugees register with the United Nations and go through an extensive process of interviews and background checks before they are offered a new home in the United States.  Once they arrive, they are given resettlement services through one of ten national agencies contracted to do so.  Other agencies (such as RISE Carolina) offer post-resettlement services funded by private foundations and the Office of Refugee Resettlement, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  Services are offered for up to five years, with the hope that refugees will become a strong part of the vibrant fabric of our society. ORR also offers resettlement benefits to other populations who have been authorized to receive services, such as Ukrainian Humanitarian Paroles, Asylees (after they have received asylum), and victims of trafficking.
